Parcours 2024, Art Basel, Basel, Switzerland
Curated by Stefanie Hessler
For Parcours, the artist and choreographer Madeline Hollander presents a site-specific performance that takes Basel’s subterranean water, power, and sewer systems, along with the tradition of carnival, and its parades of sanctioned transgression, as its point of departure. As such, the performance responds to the curatorial theme of this year's Parcours, focusing on circulation—in this case of anonymous, masked and costumed, bodies moving through the streets, of hidden public and private infrastructure, such as waste and electricity, and of ancient folklore that gets passed down through performative storytelling across generations. The performance features 16 local dancers who will emerge on Clarastrasse, at the height of the Marriott hotel. The dancers will roll manhole covers, specific to that neighborhood, and lead a procession down Clarastrasse towards the Merian hotel, with a finale occurring on Mittlere Brücke over the Rhine.
