INTRA PHENOM LIVE PRESENCE, Small Editions Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, February 12, 2016
Curated by Kayla Guthrie
Performed by Jeremy Phieffer, Katie Gaydos & Madeline Hollander
ROCKINGHORSE is performance that investigates moments of corporeal translation, physical miss-communication, and empty signifiers collected from recent media events. The choreography draws primarily from the movements performed by the sign-language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial service in 2013. The interpreter, who turned out to be a fraud, stood beside world leaders and gestured sequences of "gibberish" and unintelligable movements that were broadcaste live to global audience. The piece also draws from fictional physical signals and symbols from liturature, cinema, amd social media, as well as the miss-crowning incident during the 2015 Miss Universe contest.
